winter solstice lunar eclipse

I have told you before that I am an incurably nocturnal being. That meant that I did not have to set my alarm to see the lunar eclipse early this morning. I saw it before I went to bed!

This picture was taken at about 3:30 a.m. as the eclipse was waning. So beautiful! It was cold outside and taking a picture was tricky because I didn't want to take off my gloves but I managed to get a good pic out of a lot of duds.

Most information out and about says that the last lunar eclipse that occurred at the same time as the winter solstice was in 1554. Apparently that's not entirely accurate. At any rate, it's a very rare event and we certainly won't see another one in our lifetime.

This is a beautiful picture! I had so wanted to see the eclipse which was at 7.30 am over here but no way - clouds all around.
I have been thinking of you and Cooper a lot lately as our new pup had broken her leg back at the place where she waited for her new home after her being rescued and needs surgery now as the bones are healing at an angle instead of in a straight line. Hate to have her going through that after all those weeks of her bandaged leg but hope she'll be over it in a few more weeks.

Wasnt it gorgeous??? We've all been sick so I didn't want to set the alarm, but I ended up waking around 3:30 and then woke everybody else to see the eclipse. Interesting link. So it was longer than 456 years ago? Cool!!
